The News Channel 10 community is in mourning for the sudden and tragic passing of their beloved anchor Laura Rojas at a young age. Laura was born in El Paso, Texas but grew up in Amarillo. She attended Palo Duro High School and later majored in Spanish and Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University. She returned to Amarillo after a nine-year absence from broadcast journalism, and worked as an anchor for KVDA Channel 60 Telemundo in San Antonio, Texas. She also hosted the Spanish entertainment show “Tu Onda Internacional”, which aired in the United States and Mexico. Before joining News Channel 10/Telemundo, she was a reporter for Univision Station KEYU in Amarillo.
On Saturday, January 29, 2023, Ali Alison confirmed Laura’s death on her Facebook, writing: “I am sorry to share with you… Laura Rojas, our NewsChannel 10 and Telemundo The beautiful light in the family has passed away. Funeral will be in Amarillo next week. Services TBD. Laura was so smart and beautiful. Whenever I tell a story she helps me write the script and how to do it best. We are thinking about Laura’s family”.
Since her death was officially confirmed, Laura’s colleagues, friends and prominent figures have paid tribute to her and sent their deepest condolences to her family at this difficult time. Her sudden death has shocked her longtime New Channel 10 family and the rest of the community.
