Who was Balamani Amma?

Google Doodle on 19 July 2022, is celebrating the the113th of Balamani Amma, the notable port, who is also famous as the Grandmother of Malayalam literature. She was born in 1909 and her birthplace is Nalapat, her ancestral home in Punnayurkulam located in Thrissur District. Balmani Amma has received various awards for poetry including the Saraswati Samman and Padma Bhushan.

How has she started her writing?

Balamani Amma never took any formal training or education and was instead schooled at home by her uncle Nalappat Narayan Menon, who had also created a popular name in Malayali writing. At the age of 19 got married and her spouse’s name is V.M. Nair, the Managing Director and the Managing Editor of Mathrubhumi, a Malayalam Newspaper.

What is the name of Balamani Amma’s children?

Balamani Amma was also the mother of Kamla Das, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1984. She left the world on 29 September 2004, in Kochi, yes she took her last breath in Kerala at the age of 95.

Why is she known as the Grandmother of Malayalam literature?

Balamani Amma’s first poem was published in 1930 at the age of 21 and the title was ‘Kooppukai’. Her first recognition as a gifted poet came from the ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin, Parikshith Thampuran, who also honored her with the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram.
